Despite noise from a New Jersey Congressman about Mr. Prokhorov's dealings with Zimbabwe, the NBA Board of Governors is set to approve the Russian Billionaire's application for majority ownership of the Brooklyn/New Jersey Nyets on schedule. This is an exciting prelude to the most interesting free agent market (maybe) ever. Prokhorov was known as a free spender as the owner of the CSKA Moscow Basketball club, and with $24 million in available salary cap space for 2010-2011, Nyets fans should be pretty pumped that Goldfinger, er Prokhorov, is the man in charge.

Right-hander Phil Hughes had a no-no going into the 8th inning the other night in Oakland. This is the second time in three years that Big Philly Style has flirted with a no-hitter. Back in 2007 Hughes had the Texas Rangers shut down through 6 and 1/3 innings before an injury forced him off the mound. This time, Hughes lost his bid for immortality when he misplaced Eric Chavez's ball on the mound. Barring that strange play, #65 would more than likely have picked up his first no-no. Either way, Hughes fanned ten, upped his season record to 2-0, and showed everyone once and for all that he truly belongs in the rotation.

Lawrence Frank, formerly, of the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nyets dropped some Garden State sized expletives on ESPN First Take the other day. I guess Frank's time in the Meadowlands swamp helped to dirty up the boy genius' vocab.

Let's get ready to rumble!!!
Jay-Z has hit the Clown Prince of Beantown with a $5 million dollar lawsuit for trademark infringement and cyber-squatting for stealing the name of his popular night spot the 40/40 club. Apparently, Papi used the same logic for "borrowing" the name (he used Forty-Forty as opposed to 40/40) that he did when denying his failed steroid tests. This seems like an obvious win for Hova except for the fact that Papi opened the club in the Dominican Republic. Will authorities in the D.R. protect Papi? Whatever the outcome this is just another chapter in the ongoing war between the Red Sox Nation and the Yankee Empire...

Some Mistakes Are Worth Getting Right.

After observing Javier Vasquez's first two outings back in the pinstripes meet with little success, It seems the Yankees are intent on getting this mistake right. Vasquez is working with an 0-2 record thus far, prompting reassurances from the announcers that "this guy has got great stuff". I'm not going to write him off after 2 games, but this seems awfully familiar.
Here is a list of other Yankee pitchers who "had great stuff."
Carl Pavano
Kevin Brown
Kyle Farnsworth
Chien-Ming Wang
Randy Johnson
Kei Igawa
Jose Contreras
Jaret Wright
Kenny Rogers

DEAD GM WALKING?

After 8 games, the Metropolitans are 2-6 and right in the middle of a tough road trip. Meanwhile, the mighty Phillies are off to the races at 7-1. It's over folks. There will be plenty of empty seats in Flushing this summer as the "Amazin's" bottom dwell in the NL East (again). WIth an estimated 2010 payroll of $136 Million, good for first in the NL (again), Mets GM Omar Minaya has built an aging expensive unwatchable mess. On top of that, there is little hope for the future as stooge Tony Bernazard destroyed the Mets' farm system through sheer incompetence. Bernazard's ineptitude was legendary and Minaya's faith in his abilities should have long ago sealed the Met GM's fate. Yet the Wilpons have stubbornly stood by their embattled GM, defying logic and insulting their fan base's collective intelligence. Now let the countdown begin as the sun (thankfully) sets on the Age of Omar.

Will Tonight Be David Lee's Swan Song?

I hope this isn't it for D-Lee. Honestly, in this dark decade for the Knicks, he was probably the only bright light. He showed up as a late first round pick, more of a role player than anything else, and emerged into a legit 20-10 All-Star. He had hustle, moxy, and a damn good work ethic and the Garden faithful loved him for it. I can remember many dreary nights at MSG where Lee was the only reason I didn't cut out in the third quarter. If this is it tonight, thanks for the memories #42!!!

Hideki Matsui Still Working For Yanks?

Hideki Matsui, the World Series MVP who was let go by the Yankees at the end of last season, made his debut as an Angel in the Bronx this afternoon. Matsui was greeted with applause and cheers of gratitude at the stadium. He was even the victim of a practical joke by his old teammates, who gave him a bum ring. Whatever magic he worked for the Yanks in the final game of the World Series in the Bronx last year he worked again today, going a shocking 0-5 at the plate. In what turned out to be a close game, Matsui's 180 degree performance allowed the Yanks to start the season at home off right with a 7-5 win over Anaheim. Thanks Godzilla!!!

Larry Brown, the only man to coach every single NBA franchise while feeling no discernible connection to any of them, is about to hit the old road again. He's set to return "home" to the Philadelphia 76ers this just after "returning home" to North Carolina, which was preceded by "returning home" to New York. Peter Vecsey of the NY POST has it that Next Town Brown is headed back to the city of brotherly love to take control of that flagging operation from top to bottom.
